Tillandsia stricta
Also known as: Upright Air Plant, Stricta Tillandsia
Origin: South America
Tillandsia stricta is one of the most rewarding tillandsias for beginners and experienced growers alike, combining easy care with a spectacular bloom sequence: a flattened, deep-pink paddle-shaped bract emerges from the centre, from which small violet flowers bloom in succession over several weeks. Its arching, silvery-green leaves form a dense, grass-like rosette that integrates seamlessly with mosses and ferns on paludarium hardscape.
T. stricta is among the most offset-prolific tillandsias — a single plant can produce three to five pups per flowering cycle — making it an economical choice for filling out large paludarium areas with relatively few starter plants. It tolerates a wide range of light levels and is well-suited to the fluctuating humidity common in open-top paludariums.
Light: Medium-high indirect; 2,500–4,500 lux; brighter light encourages compact, silvery growth. CO2/Humidity: No CO2; mist 2–3 times weekly; tolerates 50–85% humidity range well. Fertilisation: Monthly misting with quarter-strength orchid or bromeliad fertiliser during the growing season. Placement: Glue or tie to driftwood, cork bark, or rock; ensure base is not sealed against a surface to allow airflow. Propagation: Detach pups at half parent size; reattach to hardscape with non-toxic glue or soft wire.
