Tillandsia usneoides
Also known as: Spanish Moss, Old Man's Beard
Origin: Americas (widespread)
Tillandsia usneoides is unlike any other air plant — it grows as a chain of tiny silver-green leaf segments linked end-to-end, forming long, flowing strands that drape from any surface they are draped over. In paludariums it is draped over branches, cork bark pegs, or mesh frames to create the effect of a Spanish bayou or South American cloud forest. The fine silver trichome coating gives the plant its characteristic silver-grey colour and is the primary mechanism for water and nutrient absorption.
In high-humidity paludariums, Spanish Moss grows with minimal intervention, requiring only occasional misting to supplement natural condensation. It does not have roots and attaches to surfaces by wrapping its basal strands around them. Bright indirect light encourages the tightest, most attractive strand growth, while low light results in sparser, more elongated strands.
Light: Medium to bright indirect; 2,000–4,000 lux; avoid direct midday sun. CO2/Humidity: No CO2; mist 2–3 times weekly or rely on high ambient paludarium humidity above 70%. Fertilisation: Mist monthly with a very dilute bromeliad fertiliser (eighth strength). Placement: Drape over branches, cork pegs, or moss walls; ensure good airflow to prevent rot in dense clumps. Propagation: Divide strands and drape sections in new locations; they will establish independently.
