About

Tonina fluviatilis is native to the blackwater streams and igapó floodplains of the Amazon basin in Brazil and Venezuela, where it grows submerged in extremely soft, highly acidic, mineral-poor water with pH values often below 5.0. The water in these habitats contains dissolved tannins and humic acids that create the characteristic dark-tea colouration of Amazonian blackwaters. In these conditions the plant forms spectacular dense colonies of spirally arranged, whitish-green, hair-fine leaves clustered tightly along erect stems, creating a striking pipe-cleaner or bottlebrush silhouette. Tonina fluviatilis is one of the most demanding aquarium plants in existence — it absolutely will not tolerate hard or alkaline water, which causes rapid melt and death. It also requires warm tropical temperatures, high CO2, and consistent soft acidic water chemistry to thrive. Despite its exacting requirements, it is a prized collector's plant sought for its unique beauty and its unsurpassed ability to evoke the aesthetic of an Amazonian biotope aquarium. Advanced aquarists who use RO water and carefully manage their parameters can achieve stunning results with this species.

Care Guide

Placement Place in the midground or background of a dedicated soft-water or blackwater biotope aquarium. Keep it away from any hard decorations that may leach calcium into the water.

Lighting High lighting (60–100 PAR) maintains the plant's dense, tight spiral growth. Under lower light, internodes elongate and spirals become loose. Use a consistent photoperiod of 8–9 hours.

CO2 & Fertilisation CO2 injection at 25–35 ppm is non-negotiable. Use RO or very soft water as a base. Fertilise lightly with a complete trace element solution; avoid high phosphate or calcium concentrations. The soft-water, blackwater environment naturally keeps nutrient levels low.

Propagation Stem cuttings 5–8 cm long can be replanted, but the plant roots slowly (2–3 weeks) and must have stable soft-acid conditions throughout the process. Avoid disturbing established colonies unnecessarily.

Trimming Trim sparingly — this plant is slow-growing and sensitive to disturbance. Cut tops cleanly when they reach the desired height and replant immediately in pre-conditioned water to prevent parameter shock.
