Tonina sp. 'Belem'
Also known as: Tonina Belem, Belem Tonina
Origin: Belem, Brazil
Tonina sp. 'Belem' is widely considered a more manageable alternative to standard Tonina fluviatilis, remaining shorter and producing denser whorls of fine leaves at a slightly more forgiving growth rate. It shares the same exacting water chemistry requirements — very soft, acidic, CO2-rich conditions — but its compact form makes it easier to incorporate into mid-sized tanks without it quickly dominating the background. It is particularly effective planted in tight groups of five or more stems for a lush, textured mid-to-background column effect.
Light: High; 65–90 PAR; full-spectrum LED recommended. CO2: Required; 25–35 ppm pressurised CO2. Water: pH 5.0–6.5, very soft (GH 0–4), KH 0–2. Planting: Plant in groups in fine substrate; keep bunches tight for best visual impact. Growth: Moderate; trim tops and replant; discard woody lower sections.
