Tonina sp.
Origin: Belém, Brazil
Collected near Belém in the Rondônia/Pará border region of Brazil, this rarer Tonina species features slightly broader, more loosely arranged whorls compared to T. fluviatilis, giving it a softer, more feathery profile. Like its close relative, it demands some of the most extreme water conditions in the planted tank hobby: virtually pure, RO-derived water with extreme acidity and hardness approaching zero, combined with high CO2 injection and intense lighting. A prized gem for experienced aquascapers willing to meet its exacting requirements.
Requires virtually pure RO water with pH 4.0–6.5, GH 0–4, KH 0–1. High CO2 injection (25–35 ppm) is non-negotiable. Intense lighting (> 80 PAR minimum). Plant in fine sand or soft substrate. Dose comprehensive liquid fertilizer regularly. Without these conditions the plant rapidly deteriorates. Not suitable for community planted tanks — a dedicated species or blackwater biotope setup is ideal.
