Microsorium pteropus 'Trident'
Also known as: Trident Java Fern, Trident Fern
Origin: Southeast Asia
Trident Java Fern (Microsorium pteropus 'Trident') is a popular cultivar selected for its distinctive tri-lobed leaf tips, which give each frond an elegant, fork-like appearance. Like all Java Ferns it attaches to hardscape via its rhizome and is extremely undemanding, tolerating low light, wide water parameter ranges, and even brackish conditions. Its structured leaf shape adds architectural clarity to midground compositions.
Light: low light; one of the most shade-tolerant aquarium plants available. CO2: not required; grows reliably without injection in low-tech setups. Attachment: tie rhizome to wood or stone; never bury the rhizome — it will rot. Trimming: remove old brown fronds at the rhizome; plantlets on leaf edges can be detached and reattached. Growth: slow; propagate via rhizome division or by detaching leaf-tip plantlets.
