Glossostigma elatinoides
Origin: New Zealand, Australia
Glossostigma elatinoides is a classic foreground carpeting plant from New Zealand with tiny round leaves that hug the substrate tightly under bright light, creating a lush, manicured lawn effect beloved in competitive aquascaping. Under sufficient light it sprawls low and compact; under insufficient light it grows tall and spindly. A staple of the Nature Aquarium style and Dutch-style competition scapes. Supplied as a Tropica 1-2-Grow tissue culture cup with approximately 25 pest-free plantlets.
Plant in small pinches 1–2 cm apart in nutrient-rich fine substrate. High lighting (80+ PAR minimum at substrate), CO2 injection (>20 ppm), and regular comprehensive fertilization are all required for successful carpeting. Without these, Glossostigma grows tall rather than low. Trim with curved scissors to maintain a tight carpet. Sensitive to nutrient deficiencies — yellowing indicates iron or macro-nutrient depletion.
