Ammannia gracilis
Also known as: Ammannia Gracilis, Pink Ammannia, Large Ammannia
Origin: West Africa

Ammannia gracilis is a stem plant from tropical West Africa (though widely distributed and naturalized in other warm regions), belonging to the same family as Rotala. It produces narrow, elongated, paired leaves that take on warm copper-orange to red tones under appropriate conditions — lighter, more delicate in coloration than many red plants, with a warm amber-copper quality that provides a different aesthetic from the intense deep red of plants like Rotala macrandra.
In the aquarium, Ammannia gracilis grows upright to 30–50 cm and is suitable as a background plant in medium to large aquariums. Under medium light it tends toward olive-green; under strong light with CO2 and iron supplementation, the warm copper-orange coloration develops. It is a moderately demanding species that rewards proper care with attractive results.
Tropica supplies this as a high-quality aquatic plant specimen from their professional European cultivation facilities, ensuring reliable, algae-free introduction.
The plant propagates easily by trimming tops and replanting them, allowing bushy, multi-stemmed groupings to be created over time.
Light: Medium to high light (30–70 PAR). Moderate light produces green growth; strong light develops copper-orange to red color.
CO2: CO2 injection (15–25 mg/L) is strongly recommended for the best coloration and compact growth.
Nutrients: Iron and micronutrient supplementation significantly enhances copper-orange color. Regular liquid fertilization important.
Placement: Background stem plant. Groups of 5–9 stems for visual impact. Trim regularly and replant tops.
Maintenance: Moderate. Trim tops every 2–3 weeks and replant. Remove yellowing lower leaves and bare lower stems.
Water Parameters: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 22–28°C, soft to moderately hard water (GH 4–15).
