Cryptocoryne parva
Also known as: Dwarf Crypt, Parva Crypt, Sri Lanka Crypt
Origin: Sri Lanka
Cryptocoryne parva is the smallest known Cryptocoryne species, native to fast-flowing streams in central Sri Lanka. Its compact rosettes of narrow, upright, bright-green leaves grow only 5–8 cm tall — making it uniquely suitable for foreground placement in small to medium aquariums where a low-growing, natural-looking plant is desired without the strict requirements of true carpet plants.
Unlike many Cryptocorynes that are shade-lovers, C. parva actually requires moderate to medium-high light to grow well and maintain its compact, upright form. In low light it grows very slowly and the leaves become elongated and pale. This requirement for more light distinguishes it from other easy Crypts.
C. parva spreads very slowly by runners but eventually forms attractive, dense clusters. It is one of the slowest-growing aquarium plants available — initially frustrating for impatient aquarists but ultimately rewarding as established plants are virtually maintenance-free and extremely long-lived.
The plant is not prone to 'Crypt melt' to the same degree as other Cryptocoryne species, making it somewhat more stable after planting. Tropica produces high-quality C. parva tissue culture plants for clean, reliable introduction.
Light: Medium to medium-high light (20–40 PAR). Requires more light than most Crypts. Too little light causes pale, elongated growth rather than compact rosettes.
CO2: Not required but beneficial for improving growth rate. This is a notoriously slow grower even with CO2.
Substrate: Benefits from rich aqua soil or root tabs, as a slow-growing root feeder.
Planting: Plant individual rosettes 3–5 cm apart in the foreground. Be patient — establishment takes months, spreading is very slow.
Propagation: Very slow runner production. Simply allow runners to develop and root naturally.
Maintenance: Minimal once established. Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves. Rarely requires thinning.
Water Parameters: pH 5.5–7.5, temperature 22–28°C.
