About

Cryptocoryne spiralis is a tall, striking Cryptocoryne species native to rivers and streams of India and Sri Lanka. Its most distinctive feature is its long, narrow leaves that develop a slight to pronounced spiral twist along the length — a characteristic from which its species name derives. The leaves are bright to medium green, textured, and can reach 30–60 cm in length under good conditions.

In the aquarium, C. spiralis occupies the background position, where its tall, upright, slightly twisted leaves create an elegant, architectural presence. It is an unusual Crypt compared to the compact varieties typically seen in the hobby — its tall form makes it more suitable for background use in medium to large aquariums where it provides graceful height and movement.

Like most Cryptocorynes, C. spiralis is a hardy, adaptable plant that grows in a wide range of conditions without CO2. It is a root feeder that benefits from nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs. It spreads slowly by runners, and individual specimens can grow into impressive focal plants over time.

Tropica's cultivated specimens are typically raised in controlled conditions and may initially require adaptation (possible light Crypt melt) before establishing.

Care Guide

Light: Low to medium light (5–30 PAR). Thrives in low-light conditions — one of the few tall background plants that grows in shade.

CO2: Not required. Can be grown in low-tech setups.

Substrate: Rich aqua soil or root tabs important for long-term health, as a committed root feeder.

Crypt Melt: Possible temporary leaf loss after transplanting — normal. The healthy root system will regrow new, adapted leaves within weeks.

Placement: Background plant for medium to large aquariums. Best as a solo specimen or small group of 2–3 plants.

Maintenance: Low. Remove yellowing or damaged leaves. Propagate by removing and replanting runners.

Water Parameters: pH 6.0–8.0, temperature 22–30°C. Tolerant.
