Echinodorus grisebachii 'Bleherae'
Also known as: Large Amazon Sword, Bleherae Amazon Sword
Origin: South America (Amazon basin)

Echinodorus grisebachii 'Bleherae', known as the Amazon Sword Plant or Bleher's Sword, is one of the most recognizable and widely kept aquarium plants in the world. Native to the Amazon basin and surrounding South American waterways, it forms large rosettes of broad, elongated, pale to mid-green leaves that can reach 60+ cm in height in spacious aquariums.
The Amazon Sword has been a staple of the aquarium hobby for generations, prized for its lush, tropical appearance, adaptability to a wide range of conditions, and its ease of care. It grows without CO2 in most aquarium setups, tolerates a range of light levels, and is one of the most forgiving large aquarium plants available.
As a heavy root feeder, it benefits enormously from nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs placed at the base. Without adequate root nutrition, growth slows and leaves become pale. With regular root tab fertilization, it can grow dramatically large — producing a stunning centerpiece in large aquariums.
The Amazon Sword propagates by producing long flower stalks above the water surface, bearing daughter plantlets that can be detached and replanted once they develop small root systems.
Light: Low to high light (10–80 PAR). Grows in a wide range of lighting conditions. More light produces faster, more lush growth.
CO2: Not required. Grows well without CO2.
Substrate: Heavy root feeder. Place root tabs every 3–4 months under and around the plant. Rich aqua soil provides an excellent base.
Placement: Background or centerpiece in medium to large aquariums (80+ liters). Can dominate smaller aquariums with its eventual size.
Propagation: Detach daughter plantlets from flower stalks when they develop 3–5 leaves with root nubs.
Maintenance: Low. Remove yellowing outer leaves regularly. The plant requires room — don't crowd it.
Water Parameters: pH 6.0–8.0, temperature 22–30°C. Adaptable to most water conditions.
