About

Hydrocotyle leucocephala, Brazilian Pennywort, is a North and South American aquatic plant that is one of the most versatile and fast-growing species available in the hobby. Its distinctive round, bright-green leaves with scalloped margins grow on long, trailing stems, creating an attractive effect whether the plant is grown fully submerged as a stem plant or allowed to float at the surface.

Brazilian Pennywort is prized for its fast growth rate — in good conditions it can grow several centimeters per day — which makes it extremely effective at absorbing excess nutrients and outcompeting algae in established aquariums. Its lush, coin-like leaves and rapid growth create instant green coverage and a natural, overgrown appearance.

The plant can be used in multiple ways: planted in the substrate as a stem plant (growing upward and eventually floating at the surface), or allowed to float freely with its roots dangling into the water column. Both uses provide surface coverage that diffuses light and provides shelter for surface-dwelling fish and fry.

Hydrocotyle leucocephala is easy to grow without CO2 and adapts to a wide range of conditions, making it one of the most beginner-accessible aquarium plants available. Tropica offers high-quality specimens in their plant range.

Care Guide

Light: Low to high light (10–80 PAR). Extremely adaptable — grows in virtually any light condition.

CO2: Not required. Grows vigorously without CO2.

Floating vs. Planted: Can be used floating at the surface (no substrate needed) or planted in substrate and allowed to grow upward. Floating roots still absorb nutrients from water.

Maintenance: Very fast grower — remove excess plant frequently to prevent surface overgrowth and provide trimmings to other tanks or discard. Weekly trimming may be necessary.

Propagation: Simply cut stem sections and place in water — they root readily.

Water Parameters: pH 6.0–8.0, temperature 18–28°C. Very adaptable.
