Hygrophila pinnatifida
Also known as: Hygrophila Pinnatifida, Indian Ruffled Plant
Origin: India

Hygrophila pinnatifida is a distinctive aquatic plant from India, belonging to the Acanthaceae family but with a uniquely unusual leaf form that sets it apart from other Hygrophila species. Its leaves are pinnately lobed — deeply cut with multiple pairs of rounded lobes along a central midrib — and colored in muted brownish-green to olive tones on the upper surface with a vivid purple-red to magenta underside, creating a striking bicolor effect visible in planted aquariums.
Unlike most stem plants, Hygrophila pinnatifida is remarkably versatile in its growing method: it can be planted conventionally in substrate, or the stems can be attached to driftwood and rocks like a rhizome plant. When attached to driftwood, it gradually clings and drapes, creating a natural, epiphytic appearance that is unique among aquarium plants.
This dual functionality — substrate stem plant and epiphyte — makes it extremely versatile in aquascape design. It is effective as a midground accent, draping over rocks, or as an unusual textural element between hardscape pieces.
Under CO2 and good light, H. pinnatifida grows moderately fast with vivid bicolor foliage. Without CO2 it grows more slowly. Tropica offers a quality cultivated specimen in their aquatic plant range.
Light: Medium to high light (25–60 PAR). More light enhances the purple underside coloration and compact growth.
CO2: Beneficial (15–25 mg/L) for good growth rate and vivid coloration.
Growing Method: Planted in substrate OR attached to hardscape (driftwood, rocks) with fishing line or aquatic glue. Attaches firmly to porous surfaces over 4–8 weeks.
Nutrients: Iron and micronutrient supplementation enhances the purple underside color intensity.
Placement: Midground. Works beautifully draped over rocks or as stem groupings. Mix attachment methods for varied, natural appearance.
Maintenance: Moderate. Trim back overgrowing sections. Remove yellowing lower leaves.
Water Parameters: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 22–28°C, soft to moderately hard water.
