Limnophila sessiliflora
Also known as: Asian Ambulia, Dwarf Ambulia, Asian Water Primrose
Origin: South and South-East Asia (India, China, Japan, South-East Asia)

Limnophila sessiliflora, commonly known as Ambulia or Asian Marshweed, is a highly popular aquatic stem plant from tropical and subtropical Asia, where it grows in paddy fields, ditches, and slow rivers. In the aquarium, it produces whorls of bright-green, finely divided, needle-like leaves arranged in dense star-shaped formations at each node, creating one of the most textural, feathery backgrounds available.
Ambulia is valued for its combination of beautiful fine texture and ease of growth. It grows rapidly under a wide range of conditions, including without CO2 injection, making it accessible to beginners while still providing the visual quality desired by experienced aquascapers. Its feathery, bright-green whorled foliage creates a soft, natural-looking background or midground.
The plant grows upright and can reach the surface of most aquariums quickly under good light. Regular trimming and replanting of tops is necessary to maintain a bushy, attractive appearance. The trimmed tops root readily and can be used to create denser groupings or fill bare areas.
Ambulia is also useful for new aquariums: its rapid growth helps consume excess ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate during the initial cycling period, reducing algae risks.
Tropica produces quality Limnophila sessiliflora plants from their aquatic cultivation program.
Light: Low to high light (10–80 PAR). Grows in very low light without CO2, though best results come from medium-high light.
CO2: Not required. One of the few feathery-textured plants that grows well without CO2.
Placement: Background plant in medium to large aquariums. Groups of 7–15 stems for dense coverage. Fast-growing — needs weekly trimming in good conditions.
Maintenance: Frequent trimming required. Cut tops and replant. Remove bare or overgrown lower stems periodically.
Propagation: Cut stems and replant tops in substrate — they root readily within a week.
Water Parameters: pH 6.0–8.0, temperature 20–30°C. Very adaptable.
