Myriophyllum mattogrossense 'Red'
Also known as: Red Myriophyllum, Brazilian Water Milfoil Red
Origin: South America (Brazil, Matto Grosso region)

Myriophyllum mattogrossense 'Red' is a color-selected cultivar of the water milfoil species native to the Mato Grosso region of Brazil. In the aquarium, it produces whorls of finely pinnate, needle-like leaves in vibrant shades of orange-red to copper-red — a color that becomes increasingly intense under strong light with CO2 and iron supplementation, creating one of the most vivid red effects available among fine-textured aquatic plants.
The combination of fine, feathery leaf texture and vivid warm-red coloration makes M. mattogrossense 'Red' a standout background plant in high-tech planted aquascapes. Its delicate, whorled structure provides a soft, airy background texture that contrasts beautifully with broader-leaved or solid-green plants.
The plant requires moderately demanding conditions: strong light, CO2 injection, and comprehensive nutrient supplementation (especially iron and micronutrients). Without these, the plant may remain green or pale, growing slowly and failing to develop its signature red coloration.
Tropica's Red variety is selected specifically for its warm-red color under appropriate conditions, providing consistent results from quality-controlled cultivation.
Light: High light required (50–100+ PAR) for vivid red-orange coloration. Medium light produces pale orange or even green-tinted growth.
CO2: Essential (20–30 mg/L) for active growth and intense coloration.
Nutrients: Iron and micronutrient supplementation is critical for developing and maintaining vivid red-orange color. Regular liquid fertilization with comprehensive NPK + micros.
Placement: Background stem plant. Groups of 7–12 stems for dramatic visual impact. Trim regularly and replant tops.
Maintenance: Regular trimming is required. The plant grows moderately fast under ideal conditions. Replant tops for bushier growth.
Water Parameters: pH 5.5–7.0, temperature 22–28°C, soft to moderately hard water (GH 2–12). Best color achieved in soft, acidic conditions.
