Ceratophyllum demersum
Origin: Cosmopolitan (worldwide)
Ceratophyllum demersum, the Hornwort, is one of the most adaptable aquatic plants on Earth, found on every continent except Antarctica. Its whorls of stiff, needle-like dark green leaves line fast-growing, branching stems that require no rooting substrate. It can be floated at the surface or loosely 'planted' in substrate without anchoring. An extraordinary natural water conditioner, fry shelter, and algae competitor. Supplied as a healthy Tropica potted plant.
Float freely or place loosely in substrate — no planting required. Grows in virtually any freshwater conditions from near-freezing to tropical temperatures. No CO2 or fertilization needed — rapidly absorbs nutrients from the water column naturally. Trim regularly as it grows very fast. Ideal for breeding and fry-rearing tanks. Sheds lower needles as it grows — remove debris from the substrate periodically.
