Microsorum pteropus
Origin: Southeast Asia
Microsorum pteropus, the Java Fern, is one of the most iconic and universally loved aquarium plants, bearing dark green, leathery, lance-shaped leaves on a creeping rhizome that attaches naturally to rocks and driftwood. Virtually indestructible, it thrives in low-light, low-tech setups and is compatible with even the most boisterous or herbivorous fish that would shred most other plants. A foundation species for any aquascaped or community aquarium. Supplied in a standard Tropica pot.
Attach the rhizome to driftwood or rock with thread, rubber band, or aquarium-safe glue — never bury the rhizome in substrate as it will rot. No CO2 or high lighting required — high light encourages algae on the slow-growing leaves. Remove old leaves with spots (which are spore structures, not disease). Propagates via adventitious plantlets on older leaves and by rhizome division.
