About

Vesicularia ferriei 'Weeping Moss' is a cultivated form of moss from Asia, distinguished by its characteristic downward-hanging, cascading fronds that give it a weeping willow-like appearance unlike any other aquarium moss. When attached to elevated driftwood or overhanging rocks, the weeping fronds hang downward naturally, creating graceful, curtain-like cascades of vivid green moss.

This weeping growth habit makes the plant uniquely effective in planted aquariums where it is placed on branches or elevated hardscape positions. The hanging fronds create depth and movement in the aquascape, particularly effective in aquariums photographed from the front where the cascading moss creates layers of texture.

Like most aquatic mosses, Weeping Moss is relatively easy to care for: it tolerates a range of water conditions, grows without CO2 (though better with it), and is suitable for intermediate aquarists. Its main requirement is appropriate placement — the weeping effect is only visible when the moss hangs freely downward, which requires elevated attachment points.

Tropica produces quality Vesicularia ferriei 'Weeping Moss' tissue culture plants for algae-free introduction.

Care Guide

Light: Low to medium light (10–40 PAR). Grows in low light; more vivid and denser with medium light and CO2.

CO2: Optional. CO2 injection (10–20 mg/L) produces denser, more vivid growth.

Placement: CRITICAL for the weeping effect — attach to elevated positions on driftwood branches, overhanging rocks, or the back wall of the aquarium, so fronds can hang downward freely. The weeping habit only shows with gravity.

Attachment: Tie to hardscape with fishing line or dark thread. Fronds naturally cascade downward. Use aquatic glue for initial attachment on smooth surfaces.

Maintenance: Trim excess growth to maintain defined borders. Net out floating pieces. Regular water changes prevent algae colonization.

Water Parameters: pH 5.5–8.0, temperature 15–28°C. Tolerant.
