About

Typha latifolia is the classic bulrush of Dutch and Belgian waterways, forming impressive stands of tall strap-like foliage topped with the distinctive brown sausage-shaped seed heads recognisable to every naturalist. An essential component of naturalistic wildlife ponds, it provides nesting cover for reed warblers and food for waterfowl. Best planted in aquatic baskets to contain its vigorous spread in smaller pond settings.

Care Guide

Plant in full sun in up to 30 cm of water. Use aquatic baskets to control lateral spread. Hardy perennial that dies back in winter and re-emerges vigorously in spring. No supplemental feeding required; remove old stems before they collapse and decompose. Tolerates a wide pH range of 5.5–8.0.
