Utricularia bisquamata
Also known as: Bisquamata Bladderwort, Small Purple Bladderwort
Origin: South Africa / Madagascar
Utricularia bisquamata is a small carnivorous bladderwort from South Africa and Madagascar that forms a fine, grass-like mat of thread-thin leaves bearing microscopic suction traps. The tissue culture form starts clean and establishes readily in moist, low-nutrient substrate. Fully submerged it forms a fine turf in shallow water; emersed or semi-emersed it produces prolific tiny purple-and-white flowers. It is one of the smallest flowering plants suitable for paludariums, nanos, and Wabi-Kusa arrangements. Low nutrient conditions are preferred to prevent competition from faster-growing algae and plants. Keep the substrate consistently moist. Division of the spreading mat is the primary propagation method.
Light: Medium CO2: Not required Fertilisation: Very low nutrient requirements Placement: Foreground carpet; paludarium or terrarium Propagation: Divide mat sections; spreads naturally
