Utricularia graminifolia
Also known as: Bladderwort, Grass Bladderwort, UG
Origin: Southeast Asia
Utricularia graminifolia is a carnivorous aquatic plant native to Southeast Asia that has become highly popular in the planted aquarium hobby for its ability to form a dense, lush carpet of very fine, grass-like stems. Tiny bladder traps on underground stolons capture micro-organisms in the substrate, supplementing the plant's nutrient intake. It is considered a challenging carpeting plant requiring high light, CO2 injection, and soft acidic water; without these it struggles to establish. When conditions are optimal it creates a breathtaking natural lawn suitable for Nature Aquarium foregrounds.
Light: High (70–100+ PAR); essential for carpet formation and preventing die-back. CO2: Required at 25–40 mg/L; CO2 is critical — without it the plant fails to establish carpet. Fertiliser: Comprehensive micronutrient programme; very soft acidic water is essential. Planting: Scatter small portions on fine substrate; do not bury — rhizomes spread laterally. Growth: Slow; 3–10 cm; takes 6–12 weeks to establish carpet; patience is rewarded.
