Vallisneria americana
Also known as: American Val, Eelgrass, Tape Grass, Vallisneria
Origin: Americas
Vallisneria americana is one of the most widely distributed and commonly kept tall background plants in the aquarium hobby. Native to freshwater environments across the Americas, from Canada to South America, it produces long, ribbon-like leaves that grow vertically and sway gracefully in water current, mimicking seagrass beds and creating dynamic, visually captivating backgrounds. Leaf width varies by form — some variants are quite narrow (2–3 mm), while broader forms reach 15–20 mm. Height is highly variable as well, with leaves potentially growing 60–100 cm or more in tall aquariums, making it one of the taller aquarium plant species. Vallisneria americana is prized for its combination of vigorous growth, adaptability, and minimal care requirements. It tolerates an exceptionally broad range of water conditions, including harder, more alkaline water in which many other plants struggle. This makes it particularly valuable for aquariums housing cichlids, goldfish, or fish requiring harder water. The plant spreads prolifically via runners, rapidly colonizing available substrate and providing extensive coverage. Nutrients are drawn primarily from the substrate, making root tab supplementation the most effective fertilization strategy. CO2 injection is not required and may even be counterproductive in tanks where pH needs to remain higher. Fish and invertebrates benefit greatly from the shelter and spawning habitat the long leaves provide. Regular harvesting of runner plants prevents overcrowding.
Planting Plant individual runners in substrate so that the crown (where leaves meet roots) is just at or slightly above the substrate surface. Burying the crown causes rot. Space plants 3–5 cm apart for dense coverage. Root tabs beneath planting points are highly recommended.
Lighting Moderate light (20–40 µmol/m²/s PAR) is ideal. It adapts well to varying light levels. Insufficient light causes pale, etiolated growth; very high light combined with low CO2 may trigger algae on the long leaves.
CO2 and Fertilization CO2 injection is not required and should be omitted in tanks requiring higher pH. Root tabs every 3–4 months provide essential substrate nutrition. Liquid fertilizer benefits overall health.
Water Conditions Very broad tolerance: pH 6.5–8.0, temperature 15–30°C. One of the few aquarium plants that performs well in hard, alkaline water. Ideal for community tanks, African cichlid tanks, and goldfish tanks.
Propagation Runners produce daughter plants continuously. Separate and replant or allow to colonize naturally.
Pruning Trim leaf tips if they grow too tall and reach the surface. Remove dying leaves at the base to keep the planting neat.
Common Issues Leaves browning at tips is common and cosmetic. Runner overgrowth can overwhelm a tank — harvest periodically. Holes in leaves may indicate potassium deficiency.
