Vallisneria americana
Also known as: Eelgrass, American Eelgrass, Tape Grass
Origin: North America
Vallisneria americana 'Natans' is the most widespread Vallisneria native to North America, growing in rivers, lakes, and estuaries across the continent. Its strap-like leaves are medium-length (30–60 cm) and vivid bright-green, making them ideal for natural-style backgrounds in community and biotope tanks. Like all Vallisneria it spreads via runners and tolerates a wide range of water conditions, including slightly brackish water. It is marginally slower-growing than V. spiralis, creating slightly less aggressive colonisation, which can be an advantage in carefully planned layouts.
Light: Low to medium (15–40 PAR); thrives under minimal lighting. CO2: Not required; grows well in low-tech tanks; avoid glutaraldehyde-based liquid carbon. Fertiliser: Light root tabs every 4 months; monthly liquid fertiliser maintains vibrant green colour. Planting: Background; plant individual rosettes 3–5 cm apart in rows; keep the white crown above substrate. Growth: Moderate to fast; reaches 30–60 cm; spreads via runners; trim tips if surface-reaching.
