Vallisneria australis
Also known as: Australian Vallisneria, Southern Tape Grass
Origin: Australia
Vallisneria australis is endemic to Australia's eastern waterways, growing in rivers, lakes, and coastal wetlands from Queensland to Victoria. Its long, ribbon-like leaves reach 40–80 cm and bear very fine teeth along their margins, distinguishing it from the smooth-leaved V. spiralis. It tolerates cooler temperatures than most tropical Vallisneria species, making it an excellent background plant for subtropical tanks housing goldfish, rainbowfish, or Australian natives. Under warm tropical conditions it grows even more rapidly. It spreads by runners and can quickly form dense stands that fill the aquarium background with lush, swaying foliage.
Light: Low to medium (20–50 PAR); suited to both bright and shaded areas of the aquarium. CO2: Not required; grows vigorously without supplementation. Fertilisation: Root tabs every 3–4 months; periodic liquid iron to prevent leaf yellowing. Placement: Dense background groups; effective in Australian biotope or subtropical community tanks. Propagation: Produces runners freely; trim excess daughter plants to prevent overcrowding.
