Vallisneria caulescens
Also known as: Stem-bearing Vallisneria, Paddle-leaf Vallisneria
Origin: Australia
Vallisneria caulescens is a rare and unusual Australian species that, unlike typical Vallisneria, produces an upright, caulescent (stem-bearing) growth habit rather than the basal rosette common to the genus. Its leaves are broader and more paddle-like than other Vallisneria species, borne on an elongated stem that can reach 30–80 cm. This growth form gives the plant a structural, almost Ottelia-like appearance that is quite unlike other members of its genus. It is slower-growing and somewhat more demanding than common Vallisneria species, requiring moderate light and consistent water chemistry. It is rarely available in the hobby, making it a genuine collector's find for dedicated planted aquarium enthusiasts.
Light: Medium (30–60 PAR); consistent moderate light important for healthy stem development. CO2: Beneficial; supplementation supports the higher metabolic demand of this unusual growth form. Fertilisation: Root tabs every 2–3 months; regular comprehensive liquid fertiliser. Placement: Background specimen plant in large tanks; plant singly and allow generous space. Propagation: Lateral shoots produced at the base; detach carefully and replant when rooted.
