Vallisneria contorta
Also known as: Corkscrew Vallisneria, Twisted Tape Grass
Origin: China
Vallisneria contorta is a Chinese species in which the leaves are tightly and consistently twisted in a corkscrew pattern along their full length, more markedly so than V. torta. The result is a dense, swirling mass of foliage in the background that creates an eye-catching textural effect unlike any other aquarium plant. It grows with the same ease as other Vallisneria species — tolerating hard, alkaline water without CO2 — and spreads by runners at a moderate pace. The tight spiral of the leaves makes individual plants highly ornamental even in small numbers, but a dense background planting amplifies the textural drama dramatically. A superb alternative to plain-leaved Vallisneria.
Light: Low to medium (20–50 PAR); spiral expression is consistent across a wide range of light levels. CO2: Not required; optional supplementation accelerates growth without reducing the spiral character. Fertilisation: Root tabs every 3–4 months; liquid iron and potassium weekly. Placement: Background in groups of 8–12; mix with straight-leaved Vallisneria for layered contrast. Propagation: Lateral runners produced regularly; sever and replant daughter plants once established.
