Vallisneria dubyana
Also known as: Narrow Vallisneria, Grass Vallisneria, Southeast Asian Tape Grass
Origin: Southeast Asia
Vallisneria dubyana originates from rivers and streams across Southeast Asia, producing particularly fine, grass-like leaves that are narrower than most other Vallisneria species. In the aquarium it spreads very rapidly by runners, quickly forming a lush, dense background that resembles a natural underwater meadow. Its fine texture makes it an excellent contrast plant when placed alongside broad-leaved species such as Amazon Swords or Cryptocorynes. It thrives across a wide parameter range without CO2 injection and tolerates both hard and soft water. Regular thinning is recommended in smaller tanks to prevent the plant from completely dominating the background.
Light: Low to medium (20–50 PAR); fast growth even in shaded positions. CO2: Not required; supplementation accelerates already vigorous growth. Fertilisation: Root tabs every 3 months; liquid iron beneficial for lush green colour. Placement: Background; plant in dense groups of 10+ for immediate impact. Propagation: Very prolific runners; thin regularly by removing excess daughter plants.
