Vallisneria nana
Also known as: Dwarf Vallisneria, Narrow Vallisneria, Australian Vallisneria
Origin: Australia
Vallisneria nana is native to waterways across Queensland and northern Australia, where it grows in warm, clear streams and lakes. Its leaves are considerably narrower and shorter than the European species, typically reaching 15–30 cm, making it one of the most versatile Vallisneria species for medium and smaller aquariums. The fine-textured leaves create an elegantly natural, grass-like appearance that complements both Dutch and nature aquascapes. Like all Vallisneria it spreads by runners, but at a more manageable pace than larger species. It tolerates a wide temperature range and performs well without CO2 injection, making it an excellent choice for planted tanks where a smaller, refined look is desired.
Light: Low to medium (20–50 PAR); colours best under moderate illumination. CO2: Not required; slightly accelerated growth with supplementation. Fertilisation: Light feeder — root tabs every 4 months; occasional liquid micronutrient dose. Placement: Group in midground or background; effective as a transitional plant between foreground and tall background species. Propagation: Runners produced regularly; trim and replant daughter plants to fill gaps.
