Vallisneria nana
Also known as: Narrow Dwarf Vallisneria, Fine-leaf Australian Val
Origin: Australia (Cultivar)
Vallisneria nana 'Narrow' is a selected form of the dwarf Australian Vallisneria chosen for leaves that are even finer and more hair-like than the typical species, creating a genuinely grass-like appearance that rivals Eleocharis and Eriocaulon in fineness without requiring CO2 injection or soft water. At 15–30 cm it occupies the midground to background niche in smaller and medium aquariums and provides a naturalistic, delicate texture that complements both bold-leaved and fine-leaved companion plants. It retains all the characteristic Vallisneria hardiness — tolerating hard, alkaline water and low light — while offering a refined aesthetic quality that few other undemanding plants can match.
Light: Low to medium (20–50 PAR); fine leaf form maintained even under lower light conditions. CO2: Not required; one of the few grass-like plants that thrives without CO2 supplementation. Fertilisation: Root tabs every 4 months; occasional dilute liquid micronutrient dose. Placement: Midground to background in small to medium planted tanks; groups of 8–15 for meadow effect. Propagation: Runners produced steadily; thin as needed to maintain layout proportions.
