Vallisneria natans
Also known as: Natant Vallisneria, Asian Straight Vallisneria
Origin: Asia, widespread
Vallisneria natans is one of the most geographically widespread Vallisneria species, found naturally across much of Asia from India to Japan and extensively naturalised in other regions. Its relatively narrow, upright leaves are less prone to sprawling at the surface than larger species, making it one of the tidiest and most manageable Vallisneria for tanks of all sizes. It grows vigorously under even very low light and requires no CO2 or special fertilisation to thrive, making it practically foolproof. It spreads by runners and can tolerate a range of water parameters including moderately brackish conditions. Its rapid growth helps outcompete algae and keeps water quality stable.
Light: Low (15–40 PAR); one of the most shade-tolerant Vallisneria species available. CO2: Not required; thrives in ambient CO2 levels. Fertilisation: Minimal — a general all-in-one liquid fertiliser every 1–2 weeks is sufficient. Placement: Group densely in the background; can be used in tanks as small as 30 litres. Propagation: Prolific runner production; sever daughter plants and replant or remove to control density.
