Vallisneria pusilla
Also known as: Small Vallisneria, Dwarf Asian Tape Grass
Origin: Asia, Africa
Vallisneria pusilla is a small species found across Asia and parts of Africa, naturally occurring in shallow, warm waterways where it forms low, grass-like colonies. Its leaves are noticeably shorter and finer than V. natans or V. spiralis, typically reaching 10–25 cm, giving it a refined, miniature quality well suited to smaller aquariums and midground positions in medium setups. It is slightly less aggressive in spreading than larger species, making it easier to maintain in a controlled layout. Like all Vallisneria it requires no CO2 injection and tolerates hard, alkaline water without issue. The delicate, grass-like appearance makes it a graceful transition plant between foreground carpets and tall background Vallisneria.
Light: Low to medium (20–50 PAR); compact leaf length maintained across a wide light range. CO2: Not required; benefits moderately from supplementation. Fertilisation: Root tabs every 4 months; light liquid fertiliser every 2 weeks. Placement: Midground in medium and smaller tanks; effective as a transition zone between foreground and background. Propagation: Runners produced at a manageable rate; thin as needed to maintain layout.
