Vallisneria spiralis
Origin: Europe, Asia, Africa
Vallisneria spiralis is one of the most widely available aquarium plants in Belgium and the Netherlands — a true staple found in virtually every shop. Its long, narrow ribbon-like leaves sway gracefully in current, providing excellent refuge for fry and small fish. It spreads rapidly via runners across the substrate, filling background zones naturally and outcompeting algae through dense planting.
Plant in groups in a nutrient-enriched substrate at the back of the aquarium. No CO2 required; tolerant of low light but grows faster with medium intensity. Spread via runners — no need to divide unless overcrowded. Avoid trimming leaves mid-length; remove old yellowed leaves at the base. Compatible with herbivorous fish — goldfish and cichlids may graze the leaves.
