Vallisneria spiralis
Origin: Cosmopolitan (warm regions worldwide)
Vallisneria spiralis is one of the most widely used aquarium plants, forming dense, grass-like stands in the background. Ribbon-like leaves grow upright and spread rapidly via runners, quickly filling the background of any aquarium. Ideal for goldfish and cichlid tanks due to its toughness.
Very adaptable: pH 6.5–8.5, temperature 15–30°C, tolerates hard water. Low to medium light. Plant runners individually, leaving crown above substrate. Do not plant too deep. Spreads prolifically via lateral runners. Does not tolerate Excel/glutaraldehyde. Root feeder — use substrate fertilizer.
