Vallisneria torta
Also known as: Corkscrew Vallisneria, Spiral Vallisneria, Twisted Vallisneria
Origin: Asia
Vallisneria torta is an Asian species celebrated for its leaves that spiral tightly along their length in a corkscrew pattern, providing an eye-catching textural contrast to the straighter leaves of other background plants. In good conditions the leaves reach 20–40 cm, forming dense, swirling clumps that move hypnotically in water flow. It shares the same undemanding nature as other Vallisneria species, thriving in hard, alkaline water without CO2 injection and tolerating a broad temperature range. It spreads by runners but at a more controlled pace than the larger species, making it easier to manage in mid-sized aquariums. The spiral becomes most pronounced under moderate to bright lighting.
Light: Low to medium (20–50 PAR); spiral expression enhanced under brighter light. CO2: Not required; optional supplementation improves growth rate. Fertilisation: Root tabs every 3–4 months; liquid iron beneficial to maintain vivid green coloration. Placement: Plant in groups of 5–10 in mid or background; contrast effectively against broad-leaved plants. Propagation: Lateral runners; detach daughter plants once 5–8 cm tall.
