Veronica beccabunga
Origin: Europe (native to Netherlands/Belgium)
Veronica beccabunga is a low-growing native aquatic plant that forms spreading mats of fleshy stems and rounded leaves at the pond edge, producing clusters of charming bright blue flowers with white centres throughout summer. An important marginal species in Dutch and Belgian ponds, it excels at stabilising stream banks, hosting pond invertebrates, and adding a splash of native wildflower colour. Tolerates up to 10 cm of water over its crowns.
Plant in full sun at the pond edge in moist soil or shallow water up to 10 cm depth. Hardy European perennial that re-emerges vigorously each spring. No special feeding required in a pond environment. Trim back after flowering to maintain a tidy appearance and encourage a second flush of bloom. Excellent for wildlife ponds as a nectar plant for hoverflies and bees.
