Vesicularia dubyana
Also known as: Christmas Moss, Singapore Moss
Origin: Singapore, Southeast Asia
Vesicularia dubyana is one of the original Christmas-type mosses in the hobby — in fact, for many years it was sold simply as 'Christmas Moss' before Taxiphyllum sp. 'Christmas' was distinguished as a separate species. It produces overlapping, tiered horizontal branches in the same general Christmas-tree pattern but with a slightly different texture: the individual leaves are rounder and the overall branching is somewhat more irregular than the Taxiphyllum form.
V. dubyana is warm-tolerant and performs well at tropical temperatures up to 30°C — an advantage over some other Christmas-type mosses that prefer cooler conditions. It attaches readily to hardscape, grows at a moderate rate compared to many mosses, and is tolerant of a wide range of water chemistry parameters.
This species is particularly valued in Southeast Asian biotope setups and shrimp tanks, where it provides both visual beauty and practical cover. It serves well as a moss wall component, as driftwood cover, or as a loose breeding mop for egg-scattering fish.
Light: Low; grows well at 15–40 µmol PAR and tolerates dim conditions reliably. CO2: Not required; performs well in fully low-tech setups. Fertilisation: Occasional liquid micronutrient dosing improves growth rate and maintains bright-green colour. Placement: Tie to driftwood or stone; warm-tolerant — well suited for tropical community and shrimp tanks. Propagation: Divide and reattach any portion of the moss; no minimum size required.
