Vesicularia ferriei
Also known as: Weeping Moss
Origin: China, Asia
Vesicularia ferriei 'Weeping Moss' is one of the most graceful and architecturally striking mosses in the aquarium hobby. Its distinctive characteristic is a pronounced downward, pendant growth orientation — individual fronds grow outward from attachment points and then droop under their own weight, creating long, cascading curtains of soft green that strongly evoke a weeping willow tree.
This species is particularly effective when attached to elevated hardscape elements — the upper branch of a driftwood piece, the top edge of a stone arch, or a raised rock — from which its cascading fronds can hang freely downward. The longer the moss is allowed to grow without trimming, the more dramatic the curtain effect becomes.
Weeping Moss grows slowly and prefers low light and cool to moderate temperatures. It attaches readily to rough and smooth surfaces alike with the aid of thread or gel glue. CO2 supplementation improves density but is not mandatory. In shrimp tanks, the draping fronds provide ideal shelter and foraging surfaces for dwarf shrimp.
Light: Low; 15–35 µmol PAR; intense light promotes algae on the slow-growing pendant fronds. CO2: Not required; beneficial for density but the characteristic pendant form is inherent. Fertilisation: Light weekly liquid micronutrient dosing is sufficient. Placement: Attach to elevated hardscape (upper driftwood branch, raised stone) and allow fronds to drape freely downward. Propagation: Cut pendant stems to 3–5 cm and reattach at new elevated points; re-establishment is slow.
