Vesicularia montagnei
Also known as: Christmas Moss, Christmas Tree Moss
Origin: Asia
Vesicularia montagnei 'Christmas' — universally known as Christmas moss — is among the most popular and visually distinctive aquatic mosses in the planted tank hobby. Its characteristic fronds develop a layered, triangular branching structure that closely resembles miniature fir tree branches, giving rise to the 'Christmas tree' common name. The moss is a rich, medium green and can be attached to hardscape or grown on mesh screens, moss walls, or decorative frames.
Native to South and Southeast Asia, Christmas moss thrives in cool to warm, clean water with low-to-medium lighting. It grows at a moderate pace and benefits from CO2 supplementation and regular liquid fertilisation for the densest, most layered frond structure. It is particularly popular for creating moss walls, hardscape accents, and foreground carpets using mesh panels. The layered frond architecture provides excellent spawning habitat for fish and shelter for shrimp and fry. Regular trimming encourages fresh, compact, bushy growth.
Light: Low to medium; moderate light produces the densest and most layered triangular frond structure. CO2: Recommended; CO2 supplementation significantly improves growth rate and the characteristic fir-branch layering. Fertilisation: Bi-weekly liquid micronutrients; iron and potassium are important for rich green colouration. Placement: Attach to driftwood, rocks, or mesh panels; used for walls, carpets, tree branches, and foreground accents. Propagation: Cut or tear portions of the moss and re-attach to new surfaces; re-establishes readily on most hardscape types.
