Vesicularia sp.
Also known as: Round Leaf Moss, Round Vesicularia, Plush Moss
Origin: Asia
Vesicularia sp. 'Round Leaf' is characterised by its distinctly rounded, almost orbicular leaf-like structures that overlap densely along each stem, creating a lush, plush mat texture quite different from the typical acute-leaved moss forms. The rounded leaf shape gives this variety a soft, velvet-like quality when established, and the mid-green colour is consistent across a broad range of water conditions. It grows at a moderate pace and is easy to attach to driftwood and rocks.
This moss is popular in both nature aquascapes and dedicated shrimp tanks, where the dense, rounded mat provides excellent grazing and hiding surfaces. It tolerates a wide range of water parameters and does not require CO2, making it accessible to beginner planted tank enthusiasts. Regular trimming prevents the moss from growing too thickly and ensures fresh, bright-green growth at the surface of the mat. It is well-suited to foreground carpets, mossy driftwood branches, and background moss walls.
Light: Low to medium; the rounded leaves benefit from moderate, even lighting for uniform dense growth. CO2: Not required; grows well without CO2 in clean, stable water across a range of hardness values. Fertilisation: Monthly liquid micronutrient dosing; iron contributes to the rich mid-green colouration. Placement: Attach to hardscape or mesh screens; suitable for foreground carpets, mid-ground accents, or shrimp tanks. Propagation: Divide mat sections and re-attach to new surfaces; establishes readily and quickly under adequate conditions.
