Victoria cruziana
Also known as: Santa Cruz Water Lily, Argentine Water Lily, Cruz's Water Lily
Origin: South America (Bolivia, Argentina, Paraguay)
Victoria cruziana is native to the subtropical rivers and lagoons of Bolivia, Argentina, and Paraguay — regions with warm summers but cooler winters than the Amazon basin. As a result, it is somewhat hardier than V. amazonica and tolerates water temperatures as low as 20°C, making it the more accessible species for cultivation in temperate climates with heated facilities. The pads reach 1–2.5 metres in diameter and share the iconic upturned rim and intricate rib structure of V. amazonica, though the underside is less vividly coloured.
The flowers follow the same extraordinary two-night cycle as V. amazonica — opening white and intensely fragrant on the first night, turning pink and closing on the second. Santa Cruz Water Lily was historically the more commonly cultivated Victoria species in European botanic gardens because of its greater temperature tolerance, and it is also more amenable to annual seed production in cultivation.
V. cruziana is the recommended Victoria species for enthusiasts attempting private cultivation in temperate conservatories, though it still demands considerable space, warmth, and resources to succeed.
