Ceratopteris thalictroides
Also known as: Water Sprite, Indian Fern, Water Fern, Oriental Waterfern
Origin: Pantropical
Ceratopteris thalictroides, the Water Sprite or Indian Fern, is a widely distributed pantropical aquatic fern in the family Pteridaceae, found in rice paddies, marshes, ponds, and slow rivers across Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Americas. It is one of the fastest-growing aquarium plants available, producing finely divided, deeply pinnate fronds of bright to medium green that can reach 20–40 cm in height when rooted in the substrate. The fronds have an airy, feathery quality due to their repeated fine divisions, creating a soft, flowing texture quite different from the solid structure of Java Fern or Anubias. Water Sprite is extremely versatile — it can be planted in substrate with its roots anchored in the gravel or soil, or left free-floating at the surface where it adapts by producing broader, less finely divided fronds. In substrate it functions as a fast-growing background or midground plant; at the surface it becomes a shade-providing floating plant. This dual functionality makes it exceptionally useful in community tanks, breeding setups, and new aquariums where rapid establishment and algae suppression are priorities. Water Sprite is prolific in reproduction: mature fronds develop abundant adventitious plantlets along their margins, and portions of the frond that break off and float freely will develop into new plants spontaneously. In well-fertilized tanks with moderate to bright light, Water Sprite grows so vigorously it may need trimming every week or two. Despite its fragile-looking appearance, the fronds are surprisingly robust and fish-resistant, with most herbivorous species ignoring them in favor of softer plants. An excellent natural nursery plant for breeding and fry-rearing tanks.
Water Parameters Maintain pH 5.5–7.5 and temperature 20–28 °C. Water Sprite tolerates soft to moderately hard water and adapts well to most tropical aquarium conditions. It grows fastest in warm, nutrient-rich, soft water.
Lighting Moderate to bright light (40–120 µmol) promotes vigorous growth and the finest, most lush frond development. Under low light, growth slows noticeably and fronds become simpler and less finely divided. A full-spectrum LED at moderate intensity is ideal.
Planting Plant rooted stems or plantlets in soft substrate to a depth that secures the base without burying the crown. The fine roots establish quickly in nutrient-rich substrates. Alternatively, simply float the plant for use as a surface cover.
CO2 and Fertilization CO2 supplementation significantly accelerates growth and produces more complex, beautiful fronds. Without CO2, Water Sprite still grows well under good light and in nutrient-rich water. Dose comprehensive liquid fertilizer twice weekly for best results; iron and nitrogen are particularly important given the high growth rate.
Maintenance Trim weekly or biweekly in actively growing setups. Remove plantlets from older fronds before they detach and create an unmanageable mass of floating plants. Trim yellowed or older fronds at the base.
Reproduction Plantlets develop spontaneously on frond margins. Detach plantlets with at least 2–3 fronds and several roots, then replant in substrate or allow to float.
Common Problems Yellowing indicates nitrogen or iron deficiency. Disintegrating or transparent fronds result from sudden water changes, temperature shock, or herbivory. Excessive growth can outcompete smaller, slower plants for light.
