Ceratopteris thalictroides
Origin: Pantropical
Ceratopteris thalictroides, the Water Sprite or Indian Fern, is one of the oldest aquarium plants in the hobby and one of the most versatile. It can be grown floating (where its feathery leaves provide surface cover and shelter) or planted (where it develops a more upright, bushy form). A fast grower that naturally absorbs excess nitrate and phosphate. Produces abundant plantlets on the frond edges. An ideal 'beginner plant' that also serves as a natural filter and fry refuge.
Float or plant — both work well. Fast grower; trim or harvest regularly. Low to high light; more light equals faster growth. No CO2 required. Safe for all fish and invertebrates. Removes excess nutrients efficiently.
