Zosterella dubia
Also known as: Yellow-eyed Grass, Water Star-grass
Origin: North America
Zosterella dubia (formerly Heteranthera dubia) grows in the freshwater lakes, rivers, and ponds of North America, producing narrow, alternately arranged leaves on branching stems from a creeping rhizome. It is adapted to clear, moderately hard water and is fully aquatic, thriving submerged in both tropical and temperate conditions. Delicate yellow flowers appear at the water surface in summer under good light. It is a solid, underrated background plant that fills the midground-to-background zone with a natural, uncluttered green texture.
Light: Medium (30–50 PAR); grows well under standard aquarium lighting. CO2: Not required; performs adequately in low-tech tanks with liquid fertiliser. Planting: Plant stem clusters or rhizome sections in the background substrate; space groups 8–10 cm apart. Maintenance: Trim tops when stems reach the surface; remove yellow or damaged leaves at the base. Note: Flowers (yellow, star-like) may appear at the surface under good light — a charming seasonal display.
