Opae ula, or Hawaiian volcano shrimp, are tiny crimson-red anchialine shrimp from the volcanic cave pools of Hawaii, uniquely adapted to brackish water of variable salinity. They are extraordinarily long-lived (some individuals exceed 20 years) and virtually maintenance-free once established in a sealed or semi-sealed brackish nano aquarium. Their vivid red colour and effortless care requirements make them a remarkable and low-impact aquarium animal.
